simply cannot believe." "Unlike the hokey hacks with rainbow suspenders,
the guys wearing capes and going, "Mwah-aah-aah!" all the time, or the
big names like David Copperfield, Cohen makes it easy to lose yourself
in the fantasy that you are watching a man with genuine occult powers,
someone who can actually make cards dematerialize from a tabletop and
rematerialize in a sealed envelope in his pocket."

James says, "In one illusion he made himself go through a steel plate
that had been checked by about six people from the audience. He has got
to be very agile to do some of the stunts. He likes to make people
laugh. He tells jokes, makes faces and twists his body into odd shapes.
He did a hilarious trick with a live duck and then redid it in slow
motion. The slow-motion version was even funnier than the first and had
a different ending."

Sarafina, Larry G. Jones, and Jenny Alexander is reviewed in an August
2nd article from IgoShows.com entitlted simply "Le Cabaret." Of magician
Alexander, the author says, "Jenny Alexander is a wonderful magician.
She has style, class, charm and panache. She was recently voted, "The
Sexiest Woman in Las Vegas," by City Life magazine--but don't
necessarily go to see her because of that. Go to see her because of what
a talented performer she is. All of her illusions are very well
executed. She is a joy to watch. I will certainly not be surprised if
she is recognized by someone higher up on the ladder and given an entire
show built around her and her magic. She is easily as good as most of
the magicians on the Strip." Along with notifying us of this article,
Jenny mentions that her web site has been totally revamped.

CARTER BEATS THE DEVIL
(08/7/01)
In an article from "BooksOnline.com" we learn of the release of a
suspense novel by Glen David Gold entitled "Carter Beats The Devil." The
novel presents a fictional tale in which the famed illusionist Carter
plays the central role. The cover of the novel features the famous
"Carter Beats the Devil"poster. "America in the 1920s was a nation
obsessed with magic. Not just the kind performed in theaters and on
stages across the country, but the magic of technology, science, and
prosperity. Enter Charles Carter -- a.k.a. Carter the Great -- a young
master performer whose skill as an illusionist exceeds even that of the
great Houdini. Fueled by a passion for magic that grew out of
desperation and loneliness, Carter has become a legend in his own time.
His thrilling act involves outrageous stunts carried out on elaborate
sets before the most demanding audiences. But the most outrageous stunt
of all stars none other than President Warren Harding and ends up nearly
costing Carter the reputation he worked so hard to create. Filled with
historical references that evoke the excesses and enthusiasm of postwar,
pre-Depression America, Carter Beats the Devil is the complex and
illuminating story of one man's journey through a magical -- and
sometimes dangerous -- world, where illusion is everything, and
everything is illusory. "

PENN'S STATE
(08/6/01)
The Las Vegas Sun reports on the appearance of Penn and Teller Rio
through August 19th. According to the article, "They've pushed past
typical magic tricks to make audiences consider their own phobias." The
article contains an extensive interview in which Jillette discusses
Vegas style magic saying, "The reason that magic is going to be huge in
a place like Vegas is because it's for an audience that doesn't see live
theater all the time. Magic is something people know they can only see
live. The proof of that is that even the really lousy magic shows -- and
(Las Vegas has) three of the lousiest magic shows -- even those at least
have people saying, "This is something I couldn't see on TV." I think
you'll always have a lot of magic shows here. There's no competition.
People go to see Lance Burton and come see us the next night and vice
versa. You've got Mike Close doing magic (in the piano bar) at Monte
Carlo, and he's wonderful. We recommend everybody see Mike Close and he
recommends people see us. There's nothing that sells another show better
than a good show."
