After posting a link to a TMZ story reporting on the most recent arrest of magician Jonathan Pendragon yesterday, I was roundly criticized in a public forum for not doing independent research to determine the accuracy of the article. Specifically, I was called to task by someone familiar with the story who said, "Have you thought to take the extra hour or locate public records? Write that which is accurate."

Because I am a fan of both Jonathan and Charlotte Pendragon's work in magic, I have limited my reporting on this story to simple excerpts from articles published in various mainstream publications with links to the original source. Given the nature of the criticism after yesterday's post, I have done just what was asked and received information from the Public Information Officers with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, The Ventura Police Department and the San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Office. I'll post that information after the jump so it is not featured on the front page of this site. If you are interested, it will be there for your review.

The only positive thing to come out of this effort is an interesting side story. While speaking with one of the officers involved, he started talking about magic. As it turned out, he was an avid amateur who became interested in the art while parking cars in the 1970's at the Magic Castle. He told me of doing close-up with Dai Vernon, working for the Larsen's and the constant flood of celebrities in and out of the Castle including Orson Welles. Johnny Carson and Cary Grant. As a valet, he remembered many of the cars that they drove and who tipped well. The moral of that story? Always take care of the guy parking your car. You never know when you may bump into him again later.

In any case, the rest of the info is on the next page. Let's hope that this will all soon be behind Jonathan and Charlotte and they can move on to better things. Please keep in mind that Jonathan has not been proven guilty of any crime at this time.

At approximately 10:30 AM on Wednesday July 8th, the San Luis Obisbo Sheriff's Department responded to a call from Charlotte Pendragon who advised them that her husband had fired a bullet into the floor during an argument. Upon arrival, they found Jonathan (Claude Douglas Yarbrough) waiting for them outside. He was taken into custody and booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail. (Case #2009028939)

On August 10th, TMZ reported that Jonathan had been arrested on Thursday after missing an arraignment scheduled for August 6th in spite of being in a medical facility on a mandatory hold at that time.

The TMZ report also stated that on Sunday (8/2/09) "cops picked up Pendragon again, this time for trying to break into the family home, violating his wife's restraining order against him."

I contacted the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, the Ventura County Police Department and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's office in order to get information from the public record to evaluate the accuracy of the TMZ report.

The following information was obtained from the Public Information Officers in each of these departments and from the pubic record provided:

Police encountered Jonathan Pendragon on Sunday August 2nd in connection with two incidents related to a violation of a restraining order at the Pendragon's home. One was related to a phone call and the other to a physical tresspass. After meeting with Jonathan, he was placed on a 5150 Hold according to California Welfare and Institutions Code Section 5150-5157 and entered a Ventura County medical facility.

On Thursday August 7th, Judge John Trice of the San Luis Obisbo Superior Court issued a Bench Warrant (#F00043944) for the arrest of Mr. Pendragon for "Failure to Appear" at a scheduled hearing in his courtroom on that day. The warrant was executed on Thursday August 7th by the Ventura County Police Department (Report #09-10660) and Jonathan was transported to the Ventura County Jail (Booking #1192824) where he remained in custody as of yesterday. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office stated that they were in the process of arranging transportation for him to their facility.

According to the San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Office, Jonathan is eligible for release, but must first have a hearing before the judge at which time bail should be set.

Current charges against Mr. Pendragon are:

1) Felony Assault with a firearm (Penal Code Section 245-a-2)

2) Felony Criminal Threats (Penal Code Section 422)

3) Felony Discharge of a Firearm with Gross Negligence (Penal Code Section 246.3)

4) Felony Inflict Inj. Spouse/Cohabitant (Penal Code Section 273.5-a)
